Every Deep Drawn Breath:

Dr. Wes Ely a character worth reading about. This book acts as both a autobiography of the epic career of an MD that changed the world of urgent care more than any other name in the past several decades to be sure - and SO much for the better.

I began reading this book as I pulled on a thread of curiousity about end of life/ intensive care. I found an engaging story about a character who starts out at the beginning of the story just as clueless about the dysfunctional state of intensive care, a brand new first year resident who didnt expeet to find him self intubating and heavily sedating patients daily - but found himself doing that he did. Dr. Elys’ incredible introspection allowed him to begin the journey of opening his eyes to the threats and harm unwittingly inflicted by the hospital staff on the very patients they were intending to help. But he doesn’t stop there - as is career and curiosity develop, he travels the world in search of better solutions - approaches to ICU care that puts power back in the hands of the patients and their family. He finds these solutions and shares his quest to implement them far and wide after experiencing resounding success not only with in the ridged structure of hospitals across the US, but also with in the context of re-humanizing the patient.

I recommend this book for anybody:

  • Working in ICU/medicine

  • Interested in learning about the biological dysfunctions that occur during/due to end of life injuries and illness

  • Interested in arming themselves with tools and perspective to be prepared for ICU for themselves or loved ones
